I do like the new Mini Laser Range finder that Parallax has:

100 meters and water proof. Can be mounted on a servo for 2d scanning.
I like it too, but the price puts it out of my comfort range as a hobbyist. Of course, those two products are a bit of an apples-to-oranges comparison. I wonder if there's a combination where the two could be complimentary (maybe one of the LW20s and several of the mappydots).
For close range, a laser-based vision system employing diffraction gratings could provide a coarse 2D map. It would cost maybe $10 in parts (but heavy investment in software).
