Soviet Intel 8088 Clone

http://www.ebay.com/itm/USSR-Soviet-KM1810BM88-CPU-ceramic-microprocessor-Intel-8088-clone-NOS-1991-Kiev/232185848389

$15 NOS, free ship from Russia! Lots of other Russian micros on that page too.

I know there are vintage computer collectors of domestic stuff. I guess collecting a computer from every country adds another layer to the onion.

Is there a Soviet "Stamp" I should acquire? Does it use Bulgarian BASIC? Interpreter from India? Romanian RAM? Estonian EEPROM? Oscillator from Oman? Venezuelan voltage regulator? Firmware from Finland?

I don't know about the rest but "firmware from Finland", Linux, check.

From what I've heard about Soviet clone chips you will want the military grade chips, not the commercial ones. The former are fine, the latter junk. But I don't know how to identify them as one or the other.

Almost right.. there's Bulgarian RAM IIRC (and I believe I have some at home).
  • Does it have the 8088 bug which doesn't finish a REP operation if it's interrupted?

As a statement, I have nothing to do with Russia nor any other country but mine, Brazil, wich in fact, never produced any commercialy-available cpu.

That said, and despite some ancient (90's) (and unconfirmed) rumours about early USSR-made Intel cpu clones, being marked at the factory, warning for any flawed instructions they had, in a piece-by-piece basis, like pre-ide hard disks, with their bad track lists, Wikipedia shows that perhaps Intel owes something, to russian's ingenuity...

  • A couple month's ago I bought a Russian Z80 clone. Put it in my MPF-1 and it's running perfect. Directly I buils a device to upload my program's from USB from a W10 laptop to this nice computer bord.
Ofcourse I buy a white ceramic one with gold pin's. What else ;-)

  • I remember the Russian "Agat" computer ( Apple ][ clone) that had a cpu that emulated(not very well) a 6502 cpu.

"MiG Pilot" remains a favorite book of mine. It's about the Soviet fighter pilot who stole a MiG 25 and defected to the US via Japan in 1976. There's a LOT of backstory detailing life in Russia, mostly terrible conditions. And there are a lot of comparisons between airplanes. While Soviet tech, materials and construction techniques lagged the US, there is a lot of praise for Soviet engineers who got the most out of steel, rivets, vacuum tubes and other older tech. They didn't have much titanium, so they used it sparingly in critical spots, doled out in small strips and patches.

erco-approved! Still a great read, and the book is slowly appreciating on Ebay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/JOHN-BARRON-Mig-Pilot-The-Final-Escape-of-Lt-Very-Good-Condition-/182577921947

  • Wonder if the MPF-1 can be updated to run CP/M? If I use AV_TECHs Z80, will it speak Russian?

Reminds me of the Firefox movie with Clint Eastwood:

There was a later book, "Firefox Down" that I read, and should have been a sequel.
