Propeller Activity Board .... current limits

This has probably been answered before... but I can't find it.
I'm using an FET(IRLB8743) to drive a 10W led at 12V/700mAmps, using a UCC27322 to drive the FET.
Basically, everything is fine until the UCC27322 blows up, which I have found several ways to accomplish.
In the process, I have damaged( but not completely destroyed!!! several PABs).
So... my question is ... how much current can I pass through the servo headers (at Vin=12V) without damaging the header structure:)?
AND... how do I put some kind of current limiter on the main power input to make sure I can't exceed this level?
Thanks
Rich
ps... the first time I destroyed a UCC27322... it sounded like someone was shooting at me... fun stuff!!!!
