BS2p vs BS2pe

Can I just replace the BS2p' 20MHz crystal with the 8MHz one and consider it to be the BS2pe or there's more to it?

No, the internal timing of the firmware would throw timing dependent commands off.

Besides that the BS2pe is unique to all the other modules in that it also has an additional 16K or EEPROM that can be used for data storage.
