Says the price increases to $27 in 5 days, which would be Jan 23 2017.

I've never Minecrafted. Do I need this?

Minecraft is fun, but better if you play it with a family member on your home network. That way you can spend time together without ever speaking to one another.

Even funner if you add one of those "real computer" mods to control IoT devices. Click on a redstone switch (redstone is a way to make circuits in Minecraft), and your blender turns on. Incredibly useful stuff, you know.

But kinda cool! lol. I own three versions of minecraft, and my problem is I just don't have the time to invest in the game to do the cool things you can do.

  • My 10 year old daughter loves Minecraft on her Android tablet. She isn't allowed to spend hours on it like many kids do, but she has still learned tons of tricks with manipulating things in the game. It has taught her some abilities in regards to visualization. For example, she built an entire customized garden for her Grandma based upon a sketch that she drew years ago as a dream to someday have. In a way, I look at that as infant stages of drafting or graphic design. It has also helped her with drawing skills as she understands how pieces of something fit together to make a larger picture. These are the reasons why we as parents are ok with her "playing" Minecraft. If she wished to spend more than 4 hours a week with it, I might have a different attitude.
  • I suspect you don't need it. However, @WBAConsulting hit on a reason you might want to buy it anyhow. Both of my daughters like playing Minecraft. It's one of the few games I know of that they both like and will even play together. While I don't think it has had an impact on their personal interests, at least in a way that I can quantify, I do think it's been a deeply creative experience for both of them. And, for that reason alone, it is a game worth buying (for your kids, of course).
  • I haven't kept track of the Minecraft server world, but for the original (not MCPE) Minecraft it's fairly easy to setup a simple server (e.g. https://www.spigotmc.org/) on a Raspberry Pi. I did this and put scriptcraft (https://scriptcraftjs.org) on there so we could explore some simple mods done in javascript. But the whole ecosystem is a bit confusing to me - there are all sorts of server management mods available, and the API is confusing to me. There's a company (https://www.learntomod.com) that offers programming lessons using this environment and they have a blocky type interface available. I believe that the Windows 10 version uses the pocket protocol, and unfortunately the same server software won't work. I don't know what the status of PocketMine (https://github.com/pmmp/pocketmine-mp) is but it seemed to be lagging last time I checked.

For all of that my daughter mostly just wants to build things with blocks. The tablet/phone MCPE version makes it easy to play with others without any of the hassle of setting up a server. One of the tablets acts as the server. I would assume that Windows 10 is similar, but haven't tried it. Hopefully Microsoft finally releases a nice all documented environment for modding all versions.

I bought Minecraft when it was in beta way back. Now that M$ has bought it I need to figure out if I still own my copy or have to buy it again. I know my existing username and password to log into the game do not work.
  • I thought it was worth $10, more so than most $10 games.

There's also Minetest, which is a free and open source Minecraft clone. It's significantly less polished, but it has lots of neat features that Minecraft doesn't. PC and Android clients can simultaneously play on the same server. It downloads mods automatically when you connect to a server, so you don't have to install mods on both sides yourself. Mods are per-world. Every block (except for air and stuff like that) is part of a mod.

Mods are written in Lua, which makes writing mods a breeze (especially when you compare it to Java). By default, it doesn't come with a whole lot, but that can easily be fixed by installing mods.

You should still own it. Not sure what to recommend, but don't give up hope.
