You need to get an FPGA board. You can go as cheap as the DE0-Nano ($79) or even a BeMicro-A2 ($49). Parallax makes a nice board with a Cyclone V -A9 device that can run really big things, like a 16-cog Prop2. I think we sell that for $475.

Look in the thread titled something like "Prop2 FPGA files!!!". Read the first post.

Look here for an introduction to FPGAs in general: https://www.sparkfun.com/news/1203

As for how many there are, there are too many to list. A google search for FPGA boards will find many, plus information pages about where to start.
  • Simon Monk's book "Programming FPGAs - Getting Started with Verilog" is a good starter book that covers some inexpensive FPGA boards.

Also, online training sites such as Udemy has a number of courses related to FPGA. And, both Altera and Xilinx have online training material to get you started.
