Stop the Anniversary Update?

I was dreading the unavoidable Windows 10 "Anniversary Update" (AU) to version 1607, but tonight it bombed out on me after attempting to install itself. I got this message twice:
Feature update to Windows 10, version 1607 - Error 0x80240017 and Googled it.
This article tells you how to "fix" the problem under "additional manual steps", #3, by restarting the Windows Update Service. Sure enough, mine was not running and I plan to leave it that way. In fact, I'll try to use that method to stop our other Win10 computers from AU as well.
AU makes it much more difficult to turn off Cortana, which hogs resources and opens up privacy concerns, FYI.

I have the AU running here so I was very pleased to find that it was easy to do by following the instructions here:http://www.kapilarya.com/how-to-completely-disable-cortana-in-windows-10
Well, it's a bit of a trick. You have to delete/rename the cortana executable file, which you can't do because it's running. So you have to kill it in task manager first. But you need to be quick as it gets respawned!
After a restart I see no sign of cortana running.
No doubt it will be back after the next update.
Guess this thread will get locked assp
I would vote to keep it unlocked. This is a informational thread, as long as no MS bashing crops up. In my mind, this may help Parallax users with their new computers.
But...Parallax has the last word.
Whilst I was busy googling around trying finding out how to disable all such things on a Win10 machine I started to think "Surely someone has created some script or program that does all this already?" After all it's a tedious business having to find all the relevant setting pages and check boxes, hack the registry, remove/delete files etc. And repeat that for every machine you have.
There is Spybot Search and Destroy that goes some way to do this https://www.safer-networking.org/2015/spybot-2-4-and-windows-10/
Perhaps products from anti-malware companies like F-Secure can do this?
Then I thought: WTF? It's got to the point that I want anti-malware companies to protect me from the malware that comes from the operating system vendor itself!
Outrageous.
We will see how in runs on a puny 32bit 2GB system.
This zdnet article might shed some light on not receiving it as of yet. A curious excerpt is:
Earlier today, I tried to install a "Windows XP driver" for an External USB Wi-Fi adapter (I could not find any newer drivers, anywhere). Windows 10 warned me, there be a problem using the driver, but I proceeded at my own risk (oops, I should have known better). The driver corrupted my Windows 10 installation, things got really Bonked Up, Windows 10 crashed, and could not restart.
But, instead, Windows 10 then asked me if I wanted to try an automatic repair. I said yes, and Windows 10 tried to do the repair, but then gave me a message the automatic repair failed.
But, then it gave me a message asking if it should do a restore from its last Restore date of 3 days ago, I clicked yes, Windows 10 successfully completed the restore. I restarted, the computer, and everything is back to normal, all my data is intact.
Windows will automatically reinstall the few "Windows 10 updates" it installed 3 days ago.
So to summarize, thumbs down to "Broadcom" for not having any drivers for my "antique" External USB Wi-Fi adapter, newer then those for Windows XP. Thumbs up for "Windows 10 Anniversary Update" edition, being able to restore its self to operation.
Really interesting comment because my log reveals that This is what I have now. Was previously 5?11 (5311?) 1511. It's 64-bit W10.
I hear via the grapevine that an OS company is working on an expensive product that lets the user monitor and prevent OS software from phoning home. They expect to make more $$$ than they could selling the OS.
Sort of like the rumours that virus companies are writing some of the viruses.

I sincerely thank everyone for working through the issues while I continue to use my horrible (but predictably so) Win8.1 laptop. I can tolerate horrible, but I am rather adverse to surprises.
And whilst in a Micro Center in Yonkers yesterday on other business, I saw plenty of Parallax stuff there, but since it was other business.... I didn't buy any. I did see plenty of items running Win 10, and looking unhappy.
And erco I saw two of your robots visiting. They were with a selection of robot kits....
Turned out to be a two-step upgrade on my tablet. Now at 1607.
Runs a little better than my old OS.
