Plan 9 OS

With summer boredom setting in, I thought I would try to find a completely new OS, not another *nix, Linux, or Windows. And I came across Plan 9, best part is that you can run it on a Raspberry Pi.

Since I had a Raspberry Pi 2, basically doing nothing, that is now running Plan 9. I am not sure what the kernel/system size is, but it seems to be running comfortably on the Pi, and I must say it is very responsive, not dog slow like Linux. Maybe it could be ported to the P2 when it becomes available?

Since I just started investigating this, I am not even sure if I will like it. One thing that I noticed, with this OS, you can basically start with a blank screen, I think you use the right button on your mouse to create a window size of your choice, when you release the button, it is your terminal window, and you can go from there. Just a reminder, you do need a three button mouse, I started with a Logitech Track Ball, did not like that at all. Of course you will also require a keyboard.

Plan 9 is open source, I tried to find the source but I got distracted by other things, like reading the intro papers. Has anybody else had any experience with Plan 9?

I tried it some years ago. Can't remember anything about it, apart from it being named after the cult film "Plan 9 from Outer Space". It was Bela Lugosi's last film, IIRC, and is one of the worst films ever made.

Are "one of the worst films ever made" and "cult classic" not synonymous?

    That's what I meant.

    For example "Eraser Head"

  • Eraserhead is an early David Lynch movie. My wife and I are huge DL fans for things like Blue Velvet, Twin Peaks, and Mulholland Drive, but Eraserhead is executed with such grit and steadfast antipathy to all things life-affirming that I simply cannot watch it. I suspect that makes it his most brilliant movie, but it is something I cannot appreciate if I want to actually keep living and go to work the next day.
