Loopy's Well Being

I have sent an email to Loopy (George) to see how he made it through the latest massive typhoon:

Luckily the death toll seems to be low for a 150 MPH sustained wind storm.

His internet may be down for a while. I will report back when I hear from him.

He had a falling out with the forum, but nothing that time can't forgive, wish him well.

    Loopy sent me an email:
    Hi,

After 20 plus years in Taiwan, typhoons of any size are pretty much a normal occurrence to me. This recent one is not the first super typhoon that I have been through and I merely stayed home and inside to avoid trouble as I live in a building that has been through many.

My mutt passed away in early April due to kidney failure at about 14 years of age. I knew it was coming and he was delightful up to the last.

Not sure what to say about the 'loss of billions' as most of the damage was in and around Taidung. A lot of banana trees and other orchards blown down, a lot of roofs and signs blown away, and a lot of cars and motorcycles damage.

But we didn't have extreme building failures due to flooding and not much in the way of mudslides or bridge failures.. So it seems that there wasn't as much drama to the disaster as past typhoons. Very little death or injury. but one death due to fishing from the shore during a typhoon. It seems someone always figures a typhoon is the right time to go fishing and gets drowned.

The government and insurance will cover much of the money lost. Sign makers and roofers will prosper.

Compared to Mainland China or the Philippines, Taiwan is pretty well prepared for these events, though it wasn't that way in the past. Little can be done to prevent damages to farmers or people that desire to live in mountain regions, except for evacuation.

    Looks like he is OK.
