Britain votes to leave the EU!

I was quite shocked when I woke up and turned the radio on to hear that Britain voted to leave the EU in yesterday's referendum. I was expecting that we would vote to stay in. It'll be interesting to see what happens over the next couple of years - that is all the time we have to conclude the arrangements according to the Lisbon Treaty.

Cancel the Cheques, & the exit could happen nice and quickly ? ;)
Two years to 'negotiate' shows just what is wrong with the bureaucrat overload that was the 'EU'

The whole thing came as a surprise to me. I could understand Greece having issues because they can't float the currency, but UK has no such excuse.

Cameron has just announced his resignation!
  • Is this good news or bad news?

If Boris becomes PM it's bad news.
  • Shows the Brittish self-sufficient ideals, surprised they joinded in the first place.

This morning stock markets crashed, the GBP currency crashed, but, worse, (for me), the NOK crashed too. Against the currencies of particular interest to me, at least. So now my monthly expenses increased 10%, after having already increased the weeks before due to the market worrying about Brexit. Lovely. Thanks, UK'ers..
(Right now the xe.com website, with exchange rates, is constantly overloaded in a way I've never seen before. It mostly doesn't work. Lots of people checking in vain if this improves, I guess..)

The headline: "UK Says Eww! to the EU"

I expect long customs lines to and from the UK to the continent. Things tend to have long-ranging repercussions, with many seemingly minor on the surface, but added together, a pain in the royal backside.

I knew about the Brexit vote, but this is something many people outside of the EU won't be aware of. This will have ripple effects on the global economy for years. It's kinda funny how something most people haven't heard of is so important and will likely have huge impact.

Apparently a lot of Londoners didn't vote due to bad weather. They possibly thought it wouldn't pass. In oz we have compulsory voting where you get fined for not voting. Perhaps it isn't such a bad dea after all.

You were surprised, but were you pleased or distressed (if I may be so bold)?

Buggers just wiped out a huge percentage of my personal wealth. Not that there was so much wealth there.

If this goes through my hanging around Europe may get harder. Looks like I might have to marry 'er in doors! Not such a bad idea.

If I understand correctly the vote in London and the south went towards staying in. The vote in the north and outside London went for leaving. Meanwhile up in Scotland they wanted to stay in.

    Does this mean that:

    1) The UK leaves Europe.

    2) Scotland eventually gets independence from the UK.

    3) Scotland rejoins the EU.

    What a mess.

And, if we undo the act of union between Scotland and England, which formed the UK, does that mean we finally get an independent England back again? That would be cool.

  • If you marry 'er indoors, could you have dual citizenship or would you have to give up your British citizenship? Just curious, some countries allow dual citizenship, others don't.

    I have no idea.

The deal was that anyone from an EU member state could go an live and work in any other EU member state.

    So what happens next?

All of a sudden I might become an illegal immigrant!

I'd be happy if we could disband the UK and I get a passport that says I'm a citizen of England. A country that seems to have voluntarily committed suicide over the years. Without many of it's citizens thinking about it much.

Or...I was discussing with Chip that I could stay in a shed on his walnut farm. How long would it take them to find an illegal immigrant there in Red Bluff ? :)

    Donald Trump

For ten years or more he has been trying to build a golf club in Scotland. He had a bit of an issue with one farmer who would not sell up and move out of the way. Don tried every which way to get that farmer out.

Last I heard they were building a wind farm off the cost nearby said golf course. Don tried every which way to get that stopped. It spoils the view for the rich golfer clients he expects there.

I wanted us to remain in, so it was a very unpleasant surprise.

That bit is hard to fathom

Seems the Scots are twitchy about sending barrow loads of Money south over the border, in exchange for being told what they can & cannot do do -- at least that much I can comprehend.

but to stay in the EU, means sending barrow loads of Money to Brussels, in exchange for being told what they can & cannot do ?! - Seems they have not thought this through much ?

It makes sense when you find out that, less than two years ago in their own referendum, the Scots had been talked into staying in the UK just so they would continue their EU membership.
