Motor driver board : close to controller or close to motor?

I have a system where the microcontroller will be ~2m from the motor actuator. The control signals are PWM. Is there any real difference between having long control signal wires (with the motor driver near the motor) and having long motor driver wiring (with the controller near the microcontroller) ? Assume that wires are appropriately sized.

I would go for the driver board being close to the motors. When given a choice, always give the wires carrying the most current the shortest distance. That being said, the longer signal wires should probably have some shielding.
