Really losing my mind. TTL/USB Serial and PropPlug connection question

I have one of these devices http://www.ebay.com/itm/401088562091?_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT and also a PropPlug. I am trying to connect to one of these devices http://propellerpowered.com/forum/index.php?topic=230.0 via serial (I can connect via web browser but many of the commands must be done using AT. I have tried a couple different terminal programs with no luck. I am not sure if it is wiring or what but since I only have one of these devices I want to be sure it is correct. I have TX/RX crossed on the devices. What I need to know is what is the best way to connect these to a bread board? I am using USB power from my laptop and am not sure if that is enough or not. Can someone please draw up a quick schematic of how each device should connect to a breadboard? I have breadboard power adapters and if that is my issue I can fix it but I want to make sure I do it correctly. I have to go in the hospital for surgery on the 21st and will be in there for almost a week afterwards and I want to mess with this device and also the ESP8266 WIFI devices (hopefully they will be here in time). However, I do not want to spend the entire time trying to figure out how to connect to them!!!! Thanks for the help.

I'm not sure what you are wanting ... What is connected where with the working web browser? When you say a terminal program doesn't work, is that with the same electrical connections as the browser? I get the feeling there is two setups ....

A more relaxing answer might be "take a book." :)
  • Correct. There are two setups. The browser one works fine. I just can't seem to get the Serial connection to work the way it is supposed to and there are some things that need to be done using AT commands that can not be set in the browser. With the browser all I have is 3.3V and ground connected. When I connect TX to RX and vice versa on the device/ttl I get nothing in terminal program. Which "Book" are you referring to?
  • Do you have a pic of the setup and the code? If the serial connection isn't working I'd guess wiring or code related.
  • Andy,

    I found the manual referenced at PropellerPowered.com - http://www.lillyelectronics.com/download/USR-WIFI232-X-V4.5_en.pdf
There's a wiring diagram on page 20 that also shows RTS and CTS connected.

Here is the manufacture website which has software - http://www.usriot.com/products/serial-to-wifi/

It's hard to see what signals go to the small header on your FTDI board.
  • I should be able to connect using a Prop Plug, correct? I know where to connect RX/TX and VSS but where does RES connect to? In my diagnostics I think I have discovered I have a bad USB/TTL device. I am getting voltage readings from the wrong pins.
