Anisotropic conductive film to repair LCD?

A friend of mine has a GPS that the LCD has one part of the screen that no longer works and other parts that have lines in the screen that flicker. Upon inspection, the ribbon that attaches to the screen appears to have separated in the same area the LCD does not work. Unfortunately, I cannot get the screen, so I am looking at other options. Has anyone successfully reattached the ribbon to the glass on an LCD? Can I use this "Anisotropic conductive film" to repair it? Any other ways to do so?

Comments

  • Anisotropic conductive film one way that flex cable (not ribbon cable) attaches to an LCD glass substrate. Another is called "zebra strip." I'd say either is worth a try if your friend's GPS is pretty much toast without the fix.

  • I cannot seem to find the anisotropic conductive film in stock anywhere :( I was hoping to get this fixed without it costing a ton of money. Is there another name for the "zebra strip"?
  • If the LCD is already connected via a zebra strip, this video may be helpful:

After watching the video, you will know what a zebra strip looks like and should be able to clean it. Unfortunately, the width and height of a zebra strip has to custom-fit the device at hand, so you will probably not find a stock product to replace the interface that's there.

  • Oh ok, the LCD does not have a zebra strip. It has the flex cable attached via some sort of adhesive on the cable itself but the adhesive no longer sticks to the glass. I need to replace the adhesive since I cannot get the LCD nor the flex cable. The screen is a 240 x 80 px which is what makes it so difficult to locate. Most of the LCD's I have found are 240 x 64.
  • What is the ctc spacing of the ribbon conductors? Is this a cog type with just a few conductors, or is the controller and memory external? I'm thinking conductive epoxy.
  • 'Found something that might help:

  • Thank you Phil for the link! I have ordered a piece and will hope it works!
