Need help telling my robot to deviate from the line following code and then back to the code.

I am extremely inexperienced with Basic Stamp, so I would just like to throw that out there before anyone decides verbally assault me for saying something that seems very stupid to you. I am building a small robot using a Parallax Board of Education circuit board. I have wired QTI censors and programmed it correctly to go around our track as we want it to, but I do not have the slightest idea on how to make the robot deviate from the line follower code when we want it to and then return to the line following code after performing some simple tasks. Any help is appreciated!
