Download source code for Guide to Programming Multicore Propeller Microcontroller book

I am trying to download the source code for the book - Programming and Customizing the Multicore Propeller Microcontroller without success. I have gone to the suggested site : ftp://ftp.propeller-chip.com and found the files however I cannot copy them. The best I can do is save them individually as text files and then copy then into the Propeller, rename them and save them as Spin files one at a time. There must be a better way. I cannot find another site that has them for download.
Is there a convenient way to get this source code? I want it to use as I work my way through this book.

Thanks for any help

Will

Why wouldn't you use an ftp client like filezilla to grab all the files rather than trying to browse with your browser?
  • Here's what I did (using windows 7)

I pasted the link you posted into the windows explorer address box (the files explorer, not internet explorer).

That resulted in 2 folders showing in the file window (PCMProp, and PropC3).

I left clicked on PCMProp, then Chapter_04.

Then I right clicked on the folder "Source", selected copy.
Then opened another explorer window and went to the folder I wanted to copy to (in my case "prop book", right clicked and selected paste. It took about a minute to copy all the files. The folder came over with all the files in "Source" with their correct extensions.

I would guess that you could probably do the same with the PCMProp folder, but I didn't want all the extra folders.

    Hope this helps

  • Same in Linux, I can paste this into "connect to server" in Nautilus too. Either way simply clicking on the link which takes you to the browser will only give you a browsing experience :)
  • FTP for this sort of thing is a relic, and I'm surprised it's still being used. You might also consider sending a request to Parallax Support to replicate these files for HTTP download. Since these files were placed on that FTP server, Parallax has created their Learn site (learn.parallax.com), which is a great repository for this type of thing. I don't see these files there, but that's where I would have expected them to be.

If you are using Windows OS, FTP dowload are easy using Internet Explorer, (this is the only time I use IE).

Open IE and type the ftp address in the address bar. You should see:
    FTP_1.jpg

Then hit <ALT> <V> you should see this:

Then you get a normal Windows pane that you can drag and drop files/ directories onto your hard drive:

    812 x 270 - 99K
  • One reason for Parallax keeping these at the current location is that the C3 documentation and Propeller book (still available new) provide links to that site for getting the software and detail documentation. I suppose a notice posted at that site pointing to a new address might be ok.

I've had a lot of problems and frustration lately searching for some early propeller stuff in the forums and finding that the links to other threads/posts just lead to error screens. More recent (but before the forum switch) seems to work ok.

  • Thank You to all who replied to help me. I used twm47099's technique and it worked well for me.

    always learning.........

I am new to Propeller and Parallax so it seems odd to me that they would not make it easier for people to download the open source files. I also have found broken links to what I am searching for.

    Thanks again
