$45 JaguarBoard Wants to Compete with Raspberry Pi, Needs Your Help

While those ARM based small form factor PCs give you enough of a compact machine, some of us might not be content with the power that gets you. We are currently looking at a potential competitor of the infamous Raspberry Pi in the form of the $45 JaguarBoard.

However, this little startup is far from there. The company is still looking to get Kickstarted with crowdfunding and if that happens, we will be getting a x86 architecture based SFF system with Intel Atom Z3735G (Bay Trail).

The guys making this single board based PC outline exactly who should be crowdfunding them saying:

Ever wished for a single-board computer like Raspberry Pi but with better performance and x86 architecture? JaguarBoard is your answer!

In the listed price of $45, this little thing is going to get you Intel Atom Z3735G, 1GB DDR3L memory, 16GB On Board eMMC, compatibility with Android, Linux and Windows, 5V/2A power, 3 x USB 2.0 ports 1 x SDIO3.0, two COM ports, four GPIO pins, 1 x 10/100M network interface, and 1 x HDMI1.4 (supporting up to 1080p).

For those who are wondering what x86 is going to change for you, here’s what the developers have to say:

Being based on the x86 architecture brings JaguarBoard better performance, with high level of scalability and compatibility. It allows developers and DIYers who are experienced with x86 architecture to enjoy the single board software development without having to learn about embedded systems such as ARM.

As far as the dimensions are concerned, the JaguarBoard measures 101.9mm x 64.5 mm x 1.6 mm which is pretty small.

So we are looking at a quad-core clocked at 1.33GHz to 1.83GHz and 2MB of L2 cache – would be good enough in terms of power for Internet of Things applications right?

  • Sounds like a nice step inbetween those little Brix machines and the Raspberry Pi.

Most importantly in my mind, x86 allows you to download pre-compiled binaries. Very important. Think: PropTool, bst, etc etc

I wish we had had so many options 20 years ago. :) It's another option for sure but I'm getting quite a collection of boards . At least Heater will be happy that it runs MS Windows LOL

    Bob,
"Ever wished for a single-board computer like Raspberry Pi but with better performance and x86 architecture? JaguarBoard is your answer!"

Performance is always nice of course.

Why would anyone wish for x86 architecture? For the vast majority of what people use these things for the architecture makes no noticeable difference.

"enjoy the single board software development without having to learn about embedded systems such as ARM."

    See above.

    "...four GPIO pins..."

WTF? So nothing like a Raspi then. Somehow I think they have missed a vital point here.

Well, good luck to them. There are cheap SBC's sprouting up like weeds now a days. I'm starting yawn when I hear about yet another one.

  • Re initial post: Just wondering what is infamous about RPi? Other than an occasional inflammatory and misinformed post on this forum by he-who-shall-not-post, I think the general consensus is that they're delightful and eminently useful.

Yes, as clangers go, that is a large one.
RaspPi have defined a GPIO BUS, as too have Ardunio.

Apart from that mistake, I think the general idea is good.
Intel has had a couple of go's at this, and the small Tablets show how useful a x86 can be.

There are a number of cheap TV boxes and PC boxes based on the Intel Z3635F x86 cpu. There is the Wintel box, the Vensmile IPC002, and others. Prices are dropping all the time and they are well under $100 now, and some come with legit Windows 8.1 or Windows 10.
They do lack the GPIO and serial ports. Vensmile even has battery backup. Think I would rather use these as there is volume already.

re:They do lack the GPIO and serial ports.

It list two COM ports but as everyone pointed out only 4 GPIO pins.
  • Less than impressed, it won't appeal to Arduino fans or anyone doing real world I/O.

It's probably good for playing Candy Crush and playing you tube videos tough. It's the only reason you need that sort of processing power.
