Time-Out

Just a comment as 2 threads have been closed recently, Pi Zero and C.H.I.P.
Mod was emailed, however thought it interesting to get other opinions.

It seems a shame that the Mods seem to prefer to close threads down, rather than take the bull by the horns and address people directly in-thread.

Closing a thread because someone is unable to stop themselves from insulting or impugning others reminds me of grade school where everyone gets punished because of the actions of a few.

I'd support a 2-3 day Time Out where people who seem to be having 'issues' are given a posting-free holiday to settle down.
And yes, I am sure if these had been in place earlier I would have enjoyed one or two.

Everyone else posting reasonably gets to continue discussion, as they should.

I think its one thing to argue about MS or Apple as an entity, however when it gets to the point where people are basically calling other people thieves and such without proof, Parallax should be a bit more proactive.
I doubt Parallax would be pleased if such were being bandied about Ken or Chip on other forums.

  • Closing the Pi Zero thread was, perhaps, a bit heavy-handed. An admonishment toward two veteran forumistas would have sufficed, IMO. Both are seasoned contributors, and beyond the occasional ad hominem attacks, their legendary disagreements are not only entertaining but revelatory of real technical issues worth discussing. So I would agree that a lighter touch from the mods is called for here.

  • Thanks for the feedback guys.

Time-Outs are indeed something we (the Mods) are starting to use more and more, and I'm sure all the moderators will be glad to read your support.

I think in the case of those previous threads, the purpose of the OP was so derailed that it made sense to close them up. Yes it could be said we might have got there sooner- and in which case maybe an earlier warning could have worked- but things didn't pan out that way on this occasion. Another option could be censorship as a tool to keep threads clean and relevant for everyone (ie. to remove unacceptable content), but that feels like a slippery slope!

More generally... I'd hope I mentioned this when closing those other threads, but to re-affirm:

If anyone wishes to continue the topic of a closed thread (and in doing so stay within forum guidelines and the realms of fair behaviour), then please do start a new thread- and in your first post feel free to include a link to any previous threads that you feel are relevant and provide useful content.

    Kind regards

  • Loopy, with respect, this is not the place for such comment.

If that hasn't been made abundantly clear in private emails, then we need to be clearer and I will be writing to you now as such.

I will also take the extraordinary step of removing your above post, as that was made during a period that you should not be posting.

  • I think that User Banned icon is heavy handed and defamatory.

I think that User Banned icon is heavy handed and defamatory.

It probably came from Loopy himself, rather than a mod, as a political statement. It seems odd that a mod would use the "carry on" meme.

    You would think.

That is the standard forum ban icon.

For the record, I --- aka Loopy Byteloose -- have been in discussion directly with Ken Gracy via email since nearly a day ago volunteerly requesting that all login associated with me be locked as I have wanted to abandon the Loopy Byteloose contests with any other individuals.

I find the Banned icon offensive, and feel it was unfair to Paul Allen the only previous person it was assigned to. It simply biases any reader that turns up anything I posted that might be of value.

It was unfair to Paul Allen, it is unfair to me, and it creates unnecessary problems. It is simply NOT good public relations for Parallax.

Don't bother doing some huge hunt for all the names I might log in under. I gave the complete list to Ken Gracy and the Banned Icons may soon appear under those names.

BTW, I don't believe I have any access to private emails under locked account names. So don't bother.

    Loopy-

Clearly you desire this process to be made public, so let's do that and move on.

You are fully aware this was a 48 hour ban, after which time your status (and thus icon) would have reverted.
You are fully aware you ignored several warnings which all stated you would receive an immediate ban if you continued.
You are fully aware we do this job as volunteers, and the forum is not here for your personal amusement. We have many guests to help.

Contacting Ken is your right, but communication with the moderators would be more effective, as we are the ones trying to help you. We cannot do that if you don't communicate.

You have asked to be banned several times, you have ignored our attempts to handle the matter in private to save your embarrassment, and to provide you with some time out. We cannot offer you any more assistance.

You accounts will now be banned. If you choose to re-register, please do that after January 1st with a new username and attitude. You will always be welcome here, provided you can follow the forum guidelines and most importantly relax for your own life & health benefit.

This thread is closed, but as always you can contact us on administrative matters by email, or via Ken as you prefer.
