OBC (Old Bit Collector)

Has anyone heard from or know the status of OBC? Best I can tell he hasn't posted since July and his forums on Propeller Powered seem inactive.

  • I've tried sending him email but have not received any response.
  • I have emailed a couple of time without response also.

BTW we have not seen you lately. Hope you are doing well.
  • His most recent FB post (Nov 23) shows him holding a baby. He may just be busy. I hear those things are a lot of work. :)
  • Some of us are on the PropellerPowered IRC chat on Saturday nights (9PM ET, if anyone is interested). The site is still up and running but Jeff (OBC) hasn't been spotted or heard from around there since late April or early May. Like others, we've tried emailing him and trying to raise him on his forums to no avail.

Generally every Saturday, someone asks if anyone has heard from Jeff, heads shake and we go back to whatever the topic was.

    maybe post-partum depression?
  • Heater.Heater. Posts: 21,230
Yep. That sudden realization your life has come to an end.

Before your realize a whole new life has just begun.
  • I believe the baby is a grand child. So if anything, it would be post-post-partum depression.

... which is precisely why my old age is not as productive as it should be:)

you gotta laugh your way through it:)
  • Right after the the forum change he did say he was going to "consider resigning from the forums completely".

never... if he isn't around it is because he is occupado. He was stretched pretty thin before the new family member arrived. My guess is that he is having trouble catching a free moment.

Still, it seems odd that so many people have tried to contact him and none have been successful.

I do the same thing... when I get tired I just stop communicating. Could be he doesn't want to lie about it and can't really explain it for his own reasons.
So... just disappear for a while. Being a hermit isn't all that bad:)

I guess you're right. Hermit mode sounds kind of appealing. Just got to kick the habit of checking the forums constantly.

There should be a group for it.

    There is one.

    It is called forums.parallax.com

    Enjoy!

  • I'm certain the "Public apology to Parallax and retraction of all recent messages." has something to do with OBC's absence.

I'm not surprised that OBC isn't here on these forums but I think people were mostly expressing concern that he hasn't even been present at his own PropellerPowered forums or via personal email from people he normally responds to. Anyway, I guess he's gone into hermit mode.

    Gentlemen,

I can understand the need to take a break. For personal reasons I did so myself. But there were posts on various sites indicating as to why I wasn't going to be active and especially on my own website. Perhaps it's just me, but I would think retracting from the Parallax forums and ignoring my own website would be two different things. I guess I am also a little worried because I still remember what it was when nobody heard from Sid Weaver for a while. :depressed:

And I'm worried about franklin also.

    Last active September 2014.
  • A couple other notable MIAs: Ol' Man Earl and Carl Hayes. It's been years for these two.

    -Phil
  • I spotted Earl on DIY Drones back in 2009 after he left these forums! Has it been that long?!

Carl has not been active since Oct 2009.
  • Unfortunately, I think a lot of people have disappeared. What happened to RossH?

I believe you remember this post? March 22 this year.
Thanks David, Publison, and others who have inquired as to my absence ...

I've been busy for the last few months going "off grid". Last year my wife and I purchased the Clyde River Retreat (www.ClydeRiverRetreat.com) - an eco-retreat on the south coast of NSW - and I have been spending the last few months getting it ready to accept guests. For a couple of months there I had neither telephone nor internet, so I was unable to check the forums. There is still a lot of work to do here, so my presence in the forums may still be sporadic for a while, but the worst of it seems to be over (we just had our first guests staying, and it seemed to go well).

I hope to get back to Catalina sometime soon - perhaps over winter when we expect fewer guests - but in the meantime feel free to post here or send me a message, either via Parallax PM (I have emptied my inbox) or email to Ross@TheVastyDeep.com.

StephanL38 - I included a version of Lua as a demo program for the Catalyst run-time environment because it was easy to do so (and pretty cool!). Lua was written in ANSI C so all I had to do was compile it. However, I have little experience with eLua so I don't know how long it would take to port. My quick googling says that eLua depends on NewLib (which Lua does not) so I think it would not be so easy to support eLua with Catalina. You may be able to do it more easily with GCC.

    Ross.

Ah yes, I guess we have to wait for winter to see RossH.

  • Our winter or his winter? :)

Looks like his winter is June-August so we should have heard from him already. Maybe *next* winter...

  • For Jeff, he has recent activity on Facebook, so I wouldn't worry about him too much.
