line sensor adjustment

I built the sumobot for a class project. At home it worked great on a black and white poster board. At school I tried it out and the bot doesn't seem to recognize the white and black. The schools three foot ring is a bit faded, it's like the sensors don't even see the white. Can the sensors be moved closer to the mat to remedy this?

A. Bring the sumo ring up to regulation standards with a fresh coat of paint.
B. Trials with what is considered standard sumo surfaces. As I recall, there is the black center, a white edge, and a lower contrast (maybe brown line) for positioning starts.
It just seems to be more complicated to build to a non-standard ring as you might eventually want to compete elsewhere.
I don't think there is anything in the rules that will disallow you moving the sensors closer to the ring surface. That might eliminate the need to resurface the schools ring for now.
