  • It's a no brainer to use. Why not?

Well, because any local network sharing does not work for me when I'm not local to the local network. Which is all the time.

It also does not work when the people I work with and have to share with are distributed all over the world.

You don't have a pile of computers at the house doing stuff. I don't either anymore. When I gave up IRIX, I gave up the bunker. Good.

I do have a few little computers though. Serial and a flash drive are all I need.

One might not have a good Internet connection too. Lots of peeps in the US struggle with that. Having a local net may make a lot of sense because the Internet does not. (We need to get on that. It's embarrassing)

I lucked out. Cheap fiber, no cap. Can do whatever I want. A ton of my peers just don't get that option.

Well, the thing is, there is a pile of computers in this house. From old dinosaurs running XP (Nothing to do with me :) ), to Linux PC's. Including all my hare brained Rasperry Pi, MIPS router and other projects.

I gave up trying to make all this stuff play together with SAMBA or NFS ages ago.

No, just use the in house server to exchange stuff using HTTP/HTTPS or perhaps SCP.

Nothing to do with the internet, but it has the great advantage that I can normally reach my in house server from anywhere in the world I happen to be.

  • Yeah, another SGI thing nobody picked up on at the time. All those boxes came with a nice http setup like that. Drop files, initiate video and audio chats, etc... it a cool way to go.

I had a pile of em and used it. Lots of people saw it as noise and proceeded to setup a ton of shares.... :)
