$3 RFID Reader & Tutorial

This Brit made an awesome video about the RC522 RFID module, currently $2.70 shipped at http://www.ebay.com/itm/3275New-Mifare-RC522-Card-Read-Antenna-RFID-Reader-IC-Card-Proximity-Module-Kit-/171261687340?

But I forbid you to buy that. I plan to corner the market.

And do not search "s50" for RFID fobs, tags, cards, aor labels.

Then watch the pretty girl video. Something about an RFID conspiracy, IIRC.

  • These are very cool. I was successful in reading the cards and writing data to the cards but I don't think I had the passwords figure out completely. Each sector on the card has two passwords. The passwords allow the cards to be used to carry credit for vending machines and the like.

Someday, I'll work on these again and get the password stuff figured but for now the Propeller code I posted in the thread linked below should allow one to read and write data from and to the card.

  • I haven't watched all of the first video yet but I watched the second video. I think it's a couple of years out of date. They don't need to figure out how to get people to carry RFID chips, since most of us willingly carry around phones which are broadcasting our location with a unique identifier.

I thought it very odd to hear "The Internet of Things" including items with RFID tags. Heck we don't just want our things to have RFID chips, we want our things to be their own internet hotspots.

I intend to start adding RFID readers to my robots. I want to add tags all over my house (and maybe my neighborhood) to use as an additional location verification tool. I think RFID could be used to make some fun robotic games, I just haven't figured out the details of these games yet.

Surely you haven't forgotten the Roboni-I which I also talked you into buying? :)

I did say FUN robotic games. Not just busy time robotic games.

To be honest, I never did play any of the games which came with the robot. I didn't want to have to install their software.

I have one with the original electronics and I have a second one with a Propeller as the brain. The Propeller controlled version behaves much better than the original. The original didn't have proportional control which caused it to gerbil a lot. My Propeller version drove around nice and smooth.

  • You did it again, erco!!!
