Dangit, soon everybody and their dog will have an underwater drone to spy on my secret underwater research facility.

There are good developments at;

and

After all, the air-based robots have long cracked this problem with the PING-type modules and software to match.
This excellent practical paper (which is freely available on the internet), is a definitive starting point for making low cost underwater ultrasonic sensors;
"Design of a Low-cost Underwater Acoustic Modem for Short-Range
Sensor Networking Applications
by Bridget Benson"
These guys at Open ROV have been running with the idea;

I can't help thinking that the Prop would be a good controller for this type of system.
Any ideas out there on how existing air-based ultrasonic ideas and software could be harnessed for underwater use?
