Elev-8 ESC's not syncrnoizing after completed build

Hello everyone,
I have just finished building the Elev-8 platform. However, when I follow the ESC synchronizing step at http://www.learn.parallax.com/step-37-esc-synchronization the directions do exactly what they say. I get the confirmation beeps and the then I cycle the power, I get a "beep beep beep", pause, "long beep". The light on the HoverFly also starts blinking green.
The quad copter is unresponsive after this. If I throttle up/down change the gear switch, etc. Nothing works. I haven't been able to find any additional documentation on what should be happening, but I would expect the propellers to spin
...
Anyone know what I am doing wrong?
