A couple of notes about the morphing and backups. The restoration process, when turned loose with wild abandon, really crushed the web server. That was causing the slow response times reported yesterday. Plan 'B' was to restore the posts in smaller groups. Web site performance was minimally impacted while achieving the larger goal of restoring posts. You would probably have a vertigo experience if you were actually in the thread as this process was running.
About backups. Yes, there are backups. But the problem is that the posts are embedded in several database tables with all of the other posts and their metadata. One cannot selectively restore rows of data without a lot of detailed work. If we restore the table, we wipe out anything new that was posted after the backup was created. We would correct one issue and create another one.
What Bump was able to do was the best of both worlds. Restore the missing posts (warts and all) while retaining all of the new posts.

Seems we still don't know how this happened in the first place. Which is kind of worrying.
All good now thanks, warts n all.
Cool. Sounds like some good detective works has been going on.
Where is the data that was in that thread?
EDIT
Found what looks like the reconstituted thread. Glad that wasn't lost forever. Couldn't find it on the Wayback Machine.
Are you saying there are broken links in this thread?
