I need a 3' proximity sensor with keyfob type control

I have a project where I want to trigger an output if a person walking up to a sensor has a keyfob in their pocket. The sensitivity needs to be able to detect within 3'. I use the term keyfob loosely, it can be any device that is in the pocket. Obviously this is not for passive RFID which reads onl any inch or two. Any suggestions on how to do this?

  • There are plenty of RFID readers that can handle the distance you are talking about. It looks like the ones that most closely match your need operate at 13.56MHz. Based on a quick read, it looks 3 feet requires 1 watt transmit power.

I just wrote RFdigital and they suggested this device.

"The range is adjustable from around 500ft to a few inches. You can also have the user device be a phone, for example, and have Simblee embedded in the door. You can preorder your Simblee today."
