SIDCog as a replacement for a SID chip?

SID chips are getting rare and expensive. This is a shame because frankly they're much better than other sound chips of that era. I recently saw that some AVR users have cooked up a pin compatible replacement. Here's a link: http://www.swinkels.tvtom.pl/swinsid/
It occurred to me that SID cog could do something similar, but would require some additional coding to interface the address and data bus pins to the SID registers in hub memory that SID cog uses. Has anyone done this? The reason I am asking is that it am contemplating adding a sound board to my DIY retro computer below, and SID cog might be a solution.
