"Popular" tags

I can't seem to avoid the clutter of the "Popular tags" on my phone and as I pointed out early in the migration, these tags aren't necessarily "popular". Let's have a look at the top 12:
  1. basic stamp 30,511
  2. propeller1 24,807
  3. robotics 5,899
  4. sx chips 3,634
  5. sensor 1,792
  6. education 1,459
  7. javelin 1,075
  8. project 1,007
  9. wireless 545
  10. spinneret 507
  11. propeller2 436
  12. verilog dev 199

So the extinct javelin is more popular than the P2 and the Basic Stamp tops them all? Go figure. I can only assume that certain Parallax product tags were automatically appended to all threads at the time of migration but that doesn't explain the "popular" part. Surely a popular category should be based on recent activity and not past glory?

But anyway, the main point is since this section is useless and it just clutters up the small screens, could we have it removed?

P.S. I'm sure it's been mentioned too about the "categories" section too, no need to clutter the screen here since we have a "categories" link already.

I'm assuming that those tag names are the old subforum names and were assigned to all posts from their respective subforums during the Great Condensation. Hence the misleading popularity. Perhaps it would be better if popularity were allowed to age, with too-old posts being dropped from the count, kinda like a moving average. 'Doesn't seem like a huge deal, though -- unless one actually pays attention to the tag cloud.

  • It's not a huge deal on my desktop but the categories list and popular tags list take up the whole screen on my phone. Considering that the categories list is redundant and the popular tags is misleading, then we can do ourselves a favor and get rid of them. After that we only have the menu selections left which can be moved from the left hand column into a header. That way we end up with the full width of the screen rather than the fixed left hand margin which on my laptop at present is blank for more than 2" of screen.

Yep, it's a large waste of space for a useless feature. It's also very ugly on the screen.

We have been assured that the tags feature is staying though.
  • On mobile you can turn off "full site" mode (link at very bottom of forum) and it will get rid of that stuff for you.
  • On the bright side, as a thread creator, you can go back end edit the first post and ADD tags if you want to carve out your spot in the Tag cloud!!

If people start using it, it will evolve into something....if it goes unused, then it is a distraction on the side of the page.
  • Guys !

How on earth have you all managed to turn an innocent discussion on forum tags into a debate on file systems and linux GUI's ???? !!!!!

Please try not to drift so ! Beware the moving floors....

if you are going to pull my contributions to any thread or lock a thread I create, I expect an email notification.

I don't know what you did hear, but so far my email box is empty.

Loopy, I am not sure where this is coming from. Do you have a specific post that you can share? Moderators do not just delete things out of the blue. There is usually a indication if a thread will be shut down.

  • Loopy... is this what you are missing ?

Please refer to the note at the top of the OS thread, and please consider that I might not have time to deliver personal notices whilst busy trying to keep the forum tidy for ALL members.

    Hope this explains.

  • Okay.... a new feature, the OT.
Frankly, you may just be getting busier and busier in the future.
