Forum issue: No way to add attachments to posts.

I have no idea if this is reported yet or not, there have been too many issues flying by.

Turns out there is no way to add attachments to posts.

1) I notice the "Attach a file" link below this edit box links to the following: "javascript:void(0);"

2) Pressing it somehow gets us a "Choose file" button.

3) Selecting a file with that does not actually add an attachment.

4) Oh no. You have to hover over the resulting image when "insert image" and "delete" options are presented.

5) That does not add an attachment either, but rather inserts the content in line.

    hmmmm...indeed.

So it all depends what you are attaching then ?
  • What if you don't "insert" the image?

  • I seems like the image gets uploaded even if it's not inserted.
  • Can you edit the post and delete the img codes and the text in between and still keep the thumbnail under the post?

    Tom
  • Use this post to test attachments. I'm trying to pull all the testing together in one post.

What about the only workflow making sense on complex topics to always update new code attachments in the top post?

So adding, updating and deleting attachments when editing an existing post is a must have feature...

...or did I just not find it?
  • I cannot quite tell if there is an issue to record from this thread. Attachments appear to be added to posts in this thread.

Can the OP clarify their position on this issue report?

    See thread:

Some files insert, some attach. I was testing which does which. Wasn't quite finished yet.

I guess the question is, which extensions are being supported at this time with this version of the Parallax Forum.

This is what Vanilla reports as being supported:

    https://blog.vanillaforums.com/features/how-to-use-file-upload/

  • We support the same file extensions as we did with vBulletin. If you do run across a filetype that used to be supported in vB but is not supported here, please let webmaster@parallax.com know.

There is no longer a file manager to manage attachments in the same way as vBulletin used. We are not going to be adding a file manager feature because the Vanilla attachment system is not broken; it is just different than vB. Some filetypes will not be able to be inserted inline.

Attachments are currently functional, so this issue will not be added to the tracking list. I will also be sinking this thread.

How can I attach an additional attachment to a pre existing post by editing and how can I delete and/or update/replace existing attachments e.g. to update some published code to a new version?
  • We will look into it.

For now, you can create a new comment with the new attachment, or host a file offsite and link to it. The BBCode image and url quick-buttons in the editing box make it simple to link to offsite resources like images or download links.

I will take the time to mention what is about to make me backup and move all my thread content to another forum.

I am livid about this reply...

JUST DIFFERENT? SO WHY DID YOU PEOPLE SWITCH IF ITS SO DIFFERENT? DONT YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR FORM CONTENT PRODUCERS?

Actually I just realized, due to the way the words were worded in the above thread, and how she quicky SUNK that thread, and said that the attachment system isn't broken...
They love this vanilla pile of junk, because its pretty "VANILLA" which means "LOW MAINTENANCE"

To me that just means, "Go pound sand, this place is for 5-10 year olds now, good bye"

Yea, making a new post just to ADD more attachments is a broken system compared to like 90% of other forums in operation now.

Ever heard of thread bloat? Now the content producers will have 10 replys to their own threads with attachments they forgot, updates to their code, etc..

    THIS IS NUTS.

    No attachment management system?

    You're kidding right?

Have you seen some of the posts people put here with attachments?
No really. Seriously ... Have you actually LOOKED?
If so, then you clearly don't realize how HARD people work to put all this info up, and how no attachment system is death to these forums.

Or more likely its that those who forced this system, just really don't care, due to their need for this new system to work and be good enough.
Its kinda like, I built a house, over the old house, and this new house has no roof. But thats how we want it, its not broken, its the new design, eco friendly living.

Im not even going to link to all the posts I have made since 2006 that I have had to update, edit, delete and maintain attachments.
If I had to make a new post every time I wanted to update code, improve pictures, etc...
None of it would have gotten done, its too much work to try and organize 20 of your own replys,
to your own thread, with 15 invalid replys, that have invalid attachments.

So you can EDIT the text and remove it all, great and what do we do with the reply, THAT YOU CANNOT DELETE?

Before I could just edit the main post, open attachment manager, upload attachment, place inline. Done.
Old code gone, new code in its place in the same exact reply.
Now, we may see 20 replys with a comment like

For posterity, lets see what that might look like.

"this thread once contained attachments, but are no longer vaild, see next post."

"this post once contained attachments, but are no longer vaild, see next post."

Ok, now you get to see the post that has the attachment you were looking for. (thats IF people even bother to edit their old posts) (which they wont, when its eaiser to just reply again, with a new attachment.

This will actually increase the vanilla size on disk for this method, if people even stick around this vanilla for such a thing..

I do know, that they won't.

    To where?

    A Propeller Sanctuary @ StackExchange?

    ...
  • I was looking for a picture I uploaded some time ago. This was the first time I realized there was no longer an upload/attachment manager. I had to find the picture by googling and it took a while.

The lack of an upload/attachment management system is a serious defect.

It is that. It's a core function of just about every working forum software actively used. It's baffling that attachments can't be updated in Vanilla.

The only way to handle this is to never use attachments (other than for some silly one-offs) and use external links instead, to a site where the content can be updated. That will be a major pain for a lot of people.

I know that if attachments couldn't be updated there's *no way* I could have found the right attachments when I first came to the Parallax forum, having bought a Dracblade and looking for the right software. That was a huge thread, and any decent forum will let the author update the first posts with updates to attachments now and then. And there have been many, many such threads at this forum. It's about software and hardware development after all, it *changes* with time.
