Propeller with Oscillator

Hi, I have a Propeller Chip on a board that I am thinking to remove and put on my Z80 project as a VGA Video Terminal,  there is a 5mhz crystal on the board but really don't know if I want to de-solder it... Afraid it might damage it.  I do have 10mhz, 20mhz and 40mhz "Full Can Oscillators" and thought it would be nice if I could just use one of those since I can put them in 14 pin dip sockets.
Can the Propeller work off of these type of Oscillators or does it need the crystal ones with only two pins going between X1 and X2?
Thanks,
Peter

  • The Propeller will work with an external clock. You will need to set the clock mode accordingly. Make sure that your oscillator will work at 3.3V, though. Also, your 10 MHz unit is the only one that will work with the Prop's internal PLL. You will have to set the PLL mode to  x8 instead of x16 to get 80 MHz.

  • Thanks a lot Phil!  Do you know what pin I would use?  X1 or X2?

    Uses XINPUT XI input only.
Suggest using 10MHz Osc and use PLL 8X for 80 MHz.
