Problem with 5-position switch sensor — Parallax Forums

Problem with 5-position switch sensor

Hello, my team bought this sensor. Although the center, left, up and down pin each changes from about 5
volt to about 0-0.3mvolt when being pressed to the corresponding
direction, pressing the button in the right direction does not change the
output voltage. It remains at 5 Volt all the time. As a result, the program cannot detect the right being pressed. Anybody knows what is wrong with the switch and how to solve the problem?

Just to make sure, have you run the sample code?
Are you using a Propeller or Basic Stamp?
My guess is you'll want to contact Parallax's customer service to report the problem if the switch doesn't work properly running the example code.
  • Hello, I use an Arduino UNO with the sample code provided by Parallax.

Maybe a moderator can move this to the "Accessories" category.
Anyway, in addition to having received a faulty switch, which Parallax will replace, another possibilty to look into is this: take a closer look at your wiring. The physical construction of this switch is such that it's somewhat easy to mis-connect it. Triple check your wiring and have someone else then double-check it. Note that the Right input is immediately adjacent to a N/C (not connected) pin.
If you're building this on a breadboard, it's helpful to pull the switch off, and inspect where the wires go into the breadboard. They should be as shown in the wiring diagram on this page:

There have been a few times when I moved a circuit to a different place on a breadboard it worked where it wouldn't work in the previous location.
Sometimes sections of a breadboard lose their springiness.
  • ...by any chance, did you check switch operation with an Ohm meter?

    Here's the switch documentation:

  • Hello,
All these comments will help you in the troubleshooting process. And, if the issue still occurs after you check your wiring and measure the resistance; we will gladly replace the item with a new one, that I will make sure to test personally before shipping.
