"n new" does not work. — Parallax Forums

"n new" does not work.

When I see "n new" next to a thread I expect that clicking on that might take me to the new posts it's telling me about.
No, I have to fiddle around trying to hit the last page number which is a   much smaller target.

  • I had the same problem.Just click the discussion's title...
It takes some time to get used to not clicking the "n new" text.Years of conditioning need to get reversed now...

There's more than that, because even if you see e.g. '4 new', clicking on the title may sometimes take you all the way back to the first post. Certainly when it has been post-post-edited, but also for all the 'old' threads which you had marked as read (but not actually read in the Vanilla migrated version).

Oh!That's nice!I'm missing such a behaviour in some other forums because when I update the thread's start, I want that to be noticed.
    @drohne235, @digger ... you read this? Pleaaaaaaaaase!!!  ;-)
But there should be a choice... an edit just to squash some typos probably will not justify raising the "new" flag...
  • The "n new" text is included for information purposes only. It was never intended to be a link in this version of the forums, merely another way to see that new posts or changes have been made to a thread.

If you have already visited the thread since the new forums went live, you should automatically be taken to the newest post or edit when you click on the title. This is the intended design.

    I appreciate the idea Courtney.
It's just that "n new" is bigger and highlighted and looks like a useful thing to click on.
When it does not work one has to squint at the little list of page numbers and hit the last one.

Bump included a feature to allow you to be taken to the latest post or edit simply by clicking the thread title. This only works if you have clicked on the thread before, since we moved to the new forums.

Your link should open up with a #latest at the end of it in your address bar. If it does not, it may be your personal browser settings preventing it.

Taken to a post that has been edited does much more harm than good, because you then lose the *actual* new posts that were written since your last visit. That's a disaster in long theads. After being taken maybe all the way back to the first post of, say, a 54-page thread, you have no idea where to start reading to catch up since last week or whatever.
  • Although the #latest feature is working exactly as the code intends it to, it was added to the issues list several days ago by others who share the sentiment that edited posts should be treated differently than the latest post.

Bump is already looking into a way to separate them; unless there is new information on this topic it should be adequately covered at this point.
  • Ok... having a "new" flag not reflecting changes in the discussion's starting message and a "new top" flag for only the starting message would be best...
    ...don't wake me up... I'm dreaming... ;-)
