Forum Issue: Discussions listed out of order.

Adding a post to a discussion does not always promote that discussion to the top of the list. It appears to be because the wrong timestamp is used for the last post. For example:

b4616c14562b0daa9f8b34976186a3.jpg

Heater's post was actually made at 9:29 and edited at 9:30. This should have promoted the discussion to the top or second-to-top position.

Truth be known, though, I would much rather the unread discussions be listed first in reverse chronological order, then the remaining in reverse chronological order.

Does editing  an old post actually move it in the ordering? Should it?
  • Hi
    Phil
It appears that the threads are sorted by Votes with time added.
This is not useful to myself because it throws the message thread out of context.
It would seem to me, that it would not be very difficult for person in control to set the sort
    by Time instead of Votes.
    just my 2 cents worth.
  • I don't think this is related to the voting issue. The problem seems to be that the time listed for the last post in the discussion listing and the actual time of the last post in the discussion are different. And that's what puts the discussion list out of order.

  • It appears that it works the same as the last forum, in that editing a post does not change the "posted" time on the post so it will not affect sorting by date. In other words, the sort is by "most recent post" not most recent touch.
  • Except that Heater's post was started at 9:29 and edited at 9:30, not 8:51. My post prior to his in the same discussion was at 9:28. So there's definitely something not right about the timestamps and resulting sorting.

  • Gordon has now made a post to that same discussion at 11:07. But in the discussion list, it's still down a ways with a last-post time of 8:51. That time happens to coincide with Courtney's post on page 1 of the discussion.

After some digging, I see what you are referring too now. The latest example:

Dave Hein just posted at 12:06 PM, but in the list, the time under his avatar shows 8:51 AM. I think I found a link to the 8:51AM though. He quoted Courtney Jacobs in his post and the last time she posted on the thread is 8:51AM. Maybe a bug in the forum software where it is grabbing the last post time by the quoted user instead of the posting user?
  • Well, Heater's post doesn't follow with my logic, so I can't be entirely right. Maybe Courtney has a "trump all times" sort of account........

Well, now a post by Dave Hein has taken the place as the last one, and its timestamp on the General Discussion list page says 8:51am.
The forum clearly has something for 8:51 in the morning. Maybe some important ripple point in time, you know, like November 5, 1955, or October 21, 2015.
Anyway, the forum is clearly out of its time, entering the wrong timestamps on the discussion list pages;  Whatever is going on is a verifiable bug.
  • Guess we could ask Courtney to post to that thread again and see if the "fixed time stamp" updates to her posting. Won't solve anything but might clear out a bug that was left from her 8:51AM post.
  • Yeah, I thought about that, too. Maybe she'll see this ... :)

  • You broke the spell, Phil. Your latest post is showing up as 3:46PM, both here and on the list page.
I'm interested in seeing if my post reverts it!
  • Ah, but Gordon, this is not the thread that was affected by said "spell."

    D'oh!
  • Hmm.  I just posted to the mobile-vs-desktop thread but it is still listed on page two, as if July 6th.  Courtney was the last one to post there, July 7th.

  • I don't know if this is applicable to what you guys are talking about but.....
Posting was out of order for me also and this is what fixed the order for me.  After the original post, the comments begin, indicated by a dotted line and followed by the word "Comments" in bold letters, and under that is the "15 Comments sorted by Votes Date Added".  Simply click the hyperlink "Date Added"
  • Bruce, not applicable, and a different issue. We're talking about the discussion list of threads showing date stamps (and ordering) that don't accurately reflect the actual last post in those threads.
  • Now it appears that this thread is affected. Gordon's post was at 9:40 this morning, but the thread is still listed as not having updated since yesterday and appears on page 2. Let's see if this post changes anything.

    Nope, still at page 2.
