Seems the too much fluff is coming back to bite....
Page load has suddenly gotten v e r y slow, and I spot
Waiting on Gravatar.com sometimes, and then also Waiting on connect.facebook.net (or similar)
?? wtf ?
Best to totally remove these hooks, surely there is no need to run away to anyone else's web site (and shiploads of reasons why that is a bad idea)

That should fix any waiting for avatars. Also gets rid of a lot of ugliness on the page
