Breadboards and SMD.......Thoughts?

Being a bit of a pack-rat and having a low end air pen, I occasionally salvage some interesting chips to play with. Yeah, I know, some are available in DIP for not a lot, but others not so available or cheap. DACs come to mind on both. So I mount them to schmart boards for now. I really don't like the size of the pins that they come with, harder to press in a row of 14-20 pins and I wonder how much of a beating the socket will take. They are 0.25" pins.
One solution was to use the headers that work with the Arduino boards that are 0.15 on a side. The pins seem to slide in a bit easier and the header on top gives back the hole the pins took and can be a raised test point.
Anyone have similar or other ideas on this?
