I noted that you said WordPress couldn't handle the amount of fomatting you need...Hand coding HTML... I'll remember that the next time I think I'm working too hard!

    lardom,

I tried WordPress before I put the vBulletin software back up. Even with an editor add-on I couldn't get tables to work for formatting and whenever I would format the text in one section of an article it seemed to break the formatting somewhere else. I got so frustrated that I erased everything and re-installed the vBulletin software. However lately I have been watching videos on a CMS package called, "Joomla" and while it reminds me of WordPress on the backend it seems like it could work. I will of course test it before I commit to moving everything over though.

As for the hand-coded HTML...well I created two templates...one for the front page (directory) and one for the individual articles themselves. It wasn't too difficult to insert a new row at the top to add a new project or fill in the blanks on the project template and remove the unusued cells. That made it easy. Just like in my days programming the 6502 and Z80 in assembly. I would copy in routines I had previously written and simply modify them (if necessary) for the specific application, removing unused/unwanted code. So maybe not very efficient or elegant, but fully functional and simplistic. =)

Nicely summarized, Chris. These things aren't worth stressing yourself, as you noted in another post.

Joomla isn't bad. There's also Drupal, which I Parallax uses a lot -- Learn site and their shopping cart.

The thing to keep in mind is that as of April 21, Google now gives extra weight to sites that are responsive and mobile friendly. So whatever CMS or method you go with, try to find a template/theme/layout that is responsive.

It's too bad what happened with vB 5. I've always liked phpBB but wasn't sure if it could handle a large site. It looks like it can - https://www.phpbb.com/showcase/tag/large-board/
