    Have you seen the prices, could you not take a ARM4 and wrap it in lead/water instead.

    They cost as much as they do because of the testing, designed in redundancy and the fact the market for rad-hard mcu's is tiny. Secondly COTS mcu aren't rated to handle massive daily temperature swings of 200 degrees and more, or deal Cosmic ray impacts/upsets, etc.

    Also the cost of a rad-hard mcu module is miniscule when you factor in the the cost of putting up a geo-sync satellite or a probe like Curiosity. Do you really want to bet 10 years of work and hundreds of millions of dollars on a mcu you bought at Mouser working 7x24 for years on in the harshest environment imaginable?

    No you go with the best, even if it costs a bit more.
