A $50 USD junk bike will foil thieves quite nicely.

Who is dumber -- the theif or the $7000 USD bike owner? Cheap and ugly do have a certain appeal. (Hint- can a bike really be smart?)

Locks the back tire? I'd have him get up a little bit of speed then lock the front tire...

If you read the original article, this guy commutes 3 hours a day from Mill Valley, across the Golden Gate Bridge to the South of Market district in San Francisco.

When you first consider doing this, it can be done as the terrain for the most part is flat. One has to climb up to the bridge through Sausalito in one direction; through the Presido in the other direction. The rest of the ride is pretty flat.

But any motorcyclist will tell you that commuting across the Golden Gate Bridge on a daily basis in all sorts of weather in nuts. At least the bicyclist get to ride the sidewalk and don't have to deal with a lane of auto traffic. Some days you get a huge crosswind and find yourself leaning at a 45 degree angle and being buffeted by higher gusts. At the very least, this guy will have to watch the daily wind velocity on the GG Bridge and opt for taking bus into work.

You wouldn't want to lock up the front wheel and damage the bike, would you?
