You now, with that huge list of open source language compilers and tools it seems a shame to use a proprietary IDE.

Ah, come on @Heater. you are just jealous. No nicer IDE on this planet as Visual Studio. Forget Eclipse. Not even JetBrains come close. Nothing on Linux can compare to VS.

    Sadly,

Not sure about that community edition thing. I have full versions since 1990.

    Enjoy!

Is this a new move, or just new wrapping paper ?

Atmel have moved to Visual Studio as the shell of their IDE, working with their MCU compilers & Simulators.

I wonder how the various Prop BASICs would operate under Visual Studio IDE ?
From what I've seen Prop BASICs would benefit from a clean up pass to make them more compatible with other Basics.

If Microsoft have opened access to VS+VB, that could be one option ?

    msrobots,

I'm sure Visual Studio is very nice. At least it was OK when I had to use it back in 2000 or so.

I do try to forget that huge, slow, complex mess that is Eclipse as much as possible. I have no idea about JetBrains yet.

I can assure you that on Linux vim works a lot better than VS which, well, doesn't work there at all.

Actually the VS that you were using in 2000, which would have most likely been 6, runs just fine under WINE. Some of the bolt on pieces like SourceSafe and some add-on controls have difficulty, but the core IDE and compilers programs compiled for Windows run fine.
