These Terasic DE1-SoC boards seemed good value at $249, so I bought one a few months ago:

The SoC consists of a Cyclone V combined with a dual-core ARM Cortex-A9. Lots of interesting peripherals are included on the board, such as VGA, an audio codec and VGA.

I got a very simple test design consisting of a PB and an LED compiled quite easily, but was unable to get the resultant .sof file into the FPGA, so I put the thing to one side. I thought I'd have another go at it today, and it has just taken me about three hours to work out how to program the FPGA in JTAG mode. It now seems quite easy.

I think I had that same reaction once I fought with it for a while on the DE2.

It looks like an interesting board. I have a Digilent board with a Xilinx FPGA and the dual core Cortex-A9. I'm looking forward to trying it.

The DE1 has almost 4 times the LE's as the DE0-Nano (85X versus 4 x 22.3K) which means you could put 3 virtual Propellers on it with a good bit of glue logic. That could be fun for the Propeller plus ARM crowd to play with.
