Received a notice --- Google Code is shutting down

I tend to believe that there is no free lunch in this world -- so I am not surprised by this. It seems that it was only a matter of time that such services might get too expensive to provide without charge.

The real question is where to post code to be generously shared. This may be the beginning of a domino effect -- other code repositories might follow suit or seek membership fees.

Quite so. I had a free lunch yesterday, only because Amazon was hosting a day of presentations about their cloud services.
I like to think github has a sustainable model. They give free git repository services to anyone who wants to use them for open source code. Hopefully they make their money from hosting private, paid for repositories. Our company uses them. It's very convenient when you have developers in four different countries.
At the end of the day it is not a disaster if github fails. Git is a distributed system. One can easily put repos up on any server.

One more won't hurt.
Relying on Github seems to be the only good alternative. In fact, I have preferred Github over Google Code as it was focuing just on repository services.
