If you're really trying to save space, Mems also have other positive traits.
I guess you have to make some changes to the _clkmode if you used a oscillator(?).

Side note: SiTime is coming out with a 1 Hz to 32 kHz Oscillator
The 256Hz is available soon, the 1Hz would be cool as a true 1sec counter.

Not cheap, but it has impressive low Icc for a Oscillator module, so maybe they chase those who will pay first ?
SiTime also have SiT5000 family, a MEMS (VC)TCXO that has down to ±1.5 PPM and a Voltage trim pin - but so far only 10MHz+
On the RTC front, I see Holtek have now released data on their TCXO
