While we're limping along with this buttonless forum, here are a few reminders how to insert things like italics, images & videos. Not comprehensive, but it might help someone. Cut & paste, make a template, whatever floats your boat.

Per phipi: Highlight text then ctrl-B to boldface text, ctrl-I to italicize, and ctrl-U to underline

It will be great to get all the forum features back, Parallax!

(Delete space inside first bracket to use, I had to add it for the listing)

[ B]bold[/B]
[ I]italic[/I]
[ U]underline[/U]
[ S]strike-through[/S]
[ COLOR="#FF0000"]red text[/COLOR]
[ COLOR="#020FC0"]blue text[/COLOR]
[ COLOR="#008000"]green text[/COLOR]
[ COLOR="#000000"]black text[/COLOR]
[ SIZE=5]big text[/SIZE]
[ SIZE=2]default text size[/SIZE]
[ code]program listing[/code]
[ img]photo link[/img]
[ video]video link[/video]
[ url=url_address]short text[/url]

And to simplify things, you can just hit ctrl-B to boldface text, ctrl-I to italicize, and ctrl-U to underline. Hey, that's just like Microsoft Word! What could be more intuitive? :)

On a more serious note, what gives, Parallax? How long do we have to wait for a successful forum upgrade? Okay, I know it's probably not your fault. vBulletin is a huge piece of software and likely has a few bugs that you need the authors to fix first. And truth be known, the current situation isn't really all that [highlighted, hit ctrl-I et voila!, italics!] bad. We forumistas are smart enough to deal with BBcodes. After all, we're programmers! But some word about progress from inside the Rocklin fortress would surely be welcomed at this point. Bump?

Thanks for all the work you do! I know it can't be easy -- probably soul-sucking, in fact.

BB Codes can be found in the Forum FAQ.

    http://forums.parallax.com/misc.php?do=bbcode

Not easy to find unless you do a search for "BB" in the FAQ.

The infamous forum upgrade of 2014 is still a work in progress. The short version is that the scripts provided by vBulletin to upgrade the forums from the current 4.1.7 to the target 5.1.4 contain at least three fatal errors. Each one has been documented and logged with vBulletin. After two months of testing every conceivable permutation of command line script upgrades, web GUI driven database upgrades, three different versions of PHP, a total of 8 different virtualized test environments, we arrived at a set of revised scripts that complete the upgrade process. Unfortunately, the resulting database has over 300,000 broken post linkages.

As of February 20th, vBulletin support has conceded that the issue needs to be addressed by someone on their development team. Here is the last communication I have on the issue:

    "Hello,
Unfortunately, I do not have any progress on this. I have sent the dev a couple of emails but I cannot get his time to look into this until his manager OKs it. "

Almost three weeks later, there has been no movement on this by anyone at vBulletin. When I call their support center now, I am informed that I can only speak to support technicians. I seem to be firewalled into a group of people who have no hope of solving these issues.

Here is what we are going to do until the dust settles on the version 5 upgrade. We are going to step the software to version 4.2.2, the latest version 4 software to eliminate any possible known security issues. We can add back some of the custom features if we find that we are going to be in version 4 for a while longer.

.. but *please* don't add back the mis-feature which replaced the textbox with a fake textbox. As it is now the forum is compatible with all browsers, and it's possible to not only post, but also edit and update in Android. The fake-textbox version was a horrible hack. Now it works beautifully.

Appears to me that vBulletin doesn't want the business.

At the bottom of each thread, there is a box on the right hand side labeled "Posting Permissions" inside it is a line reading "BB Code is on"

"BB Code" is a link - click on it and you get a new tab with all the BB Codes listed and examples of how to use them.

    Just a click away...on every thread....just think!

I have found that by mistake. It's really not to intuitive to click on it. But it does bring up a new tab in Chrome, so that's good.

For users of a Windows OS, I uploaded this file a long time ago, but could not find it, so here it is again, in the zip file. ClipList is an exe application file, created by yours truly, and this application allows you to create a text file list of text items that you commonly want to copy and paste. With ClipList you simply click on the Title displayed in a list box and ClipList will add the intended text to the Clipboard, thus allowing you to paste the associated text wherever permissible.

In addition to the application file, I have also attached a ClipList text file of all the operable BB codes, which will make forum insertion and formatting a breeze, until we get the forum fixed.

Instructions for the use of ClipList are accessible from the application.

@erco - Apparently you disabled your spellcheck... :-)

Thanks for the nice detour in this afternoon's browsing... Almost as fun as one of your eBay detours and less expensive!
