That's a shipload of overlap in 32 bit MCUs - and the real cost of the merger is somewhat lower than $40B

"NXP intends to fund the transaction with $1.0 billion of cash from its balance sheet, $1.0 billion of new debt and approximately 115 million NXP ordinary shares."

and quite a few job losses ?
"a clear path to $500 million of annual cost synergies."

None provide free samples in a normal way - like TI or Analog does, so let them both RIP, no big loss :)

    Freescale/NXP <- NXP <- Philips Semiconductors <- Signetics

...the only thing constant is change - and company acquisitions.

Yes, those hobbyist free samples turn into so many lucrative sales deals! Any company that doesn't give things away for FREE deserves to fail!!

The Queen of Hearts should have been in mergers and acquisitions, "Off with their head[count]s!" The fastest way to cut expenses is to cut headcount. Employees are really just a burden to companies!!

Also I wish all the worst to Nichia and Renesas, for developing so great products, but not having them in stock by ANY U.S. distributor!
Hail to Holy Trinity of TI, Linear and Maxim! (Analog went too far with WL-CSP and BGA packages, no use for hobbyst)

Actually when Freescale was Motorola they did give out free samples of some of their more expensive microprocessors at the time. You just had to call their FAE and ask nicely.

Still, if a person is dependent on free samples, then they ought to consider a new hobby.

become the industry leader in high performance mixed signal solutions.

Sorry, that description made me laugh. Having been in the corporate world for a long time, I've been on both ends of many "mixed signal solutions", just not digital and analog! :o)

Let's see, "merger": we will give you CASH and shares of stock for your stock and you will cease to exist. Freescale senior executives will be taken care of and stock accounts will be settled and golden parachutes will unfurl.

It sounds like a BUYOUT and a SELLOUT to me!

I wonder how much IP Frescalle has? I'm also sure their footprint in the automotive industry is worth a few dollars to whoever ISN'T #1.
The combined company will capitalize on the growing opportunities created by the accelerating demand for security, connectivity and processing.

    I bet they will!!
Richard Clemmer, NXP Chief Executive Officer. Mr. Clemmer will continue to be the President and Chief Executive Officer of the merged company.

Strangely, the 'cost' of samples has never been on my radar.
We order from Mouser/Digikey for sample qtys, and that gives us a disti part code and a proven supply line.
Those last two items actually matter.

I do get a little annoyed if I see the 1 off price hugely disparate wrt 100/1000, and more than one vendor has lost business because of this.

Altera have simply one price on Digikey for CPLD, so they prove what can be done.
