Flash & crash: just the opposite of when Tony Stark used a little computer gizmo to shut down the paparazzi's camera flashes.

It's had a lot of discussion on the RPi forum:

Big fuss about nothing. Stick a blob of gloop on the offending chip. I'm sure they will get that problem sorted in short order.

Back in 1980 I was testing a new 400Hz power supply design for avionics gear. When I put the lid on it it's supposedly highly regulated output would change. After much head scratching I found that a diode in there was light sensitive. Being stuck across a comparator as a clamp it had a big effect on output.

Second use for a heatsink - keep photons out!

    So what's U16, anyway?

Switch mode regulator. Replaces the old analog one. Seems to come in some funky transparent package. I have yet to see one for real though.

Here is the full low down on the Shy Pi problem. Complete with close up of the offending chip.

Never mind, transparent package, actually no package!

    Sure there's packaging...
WL-CSP chips are packaged, but one side has to be left uncovered.
Unfortunately that's the side with the 'interesting bits' and the ball pads.
This normally isn't an issue as these chps are normally used in cell-phones and other closed units, not bare boards suh as the Pi 2.
Also, the side in question is facing towards the PCB, and that also reduces the probability of this problem cropping up.
On a board with more tall components close to this chip the situation might not arise, even with no enclosure.

I may get a lump of Blu-tac or something to cover up U16 just in case, not that I believe it's needed.
(The one I have will go into the Atlas 3D scanner I'll be building this spring)

    Gadgetman,

It's good to know you are one of the 1219 others who funded the Atlas 3D scanner. It looks like a fun piece of kit! I'm still anticipating delivery of my 3D printer from its Kickstarter campaign..it's a long story and an even longer wait!

At least I should have my Raspi 2 in hand well in advance.

Wasn't it Batman that did that? Maybe it was Tony Stark as well......

DOH! I think you're right. Clearly I'm not watching my superhero reruns enough. :)

I guess using a new RPi as a DMX / strobe controller isn't a good idea?

    Which printer did you back?

I'm waiting on the Overlord Pro.
(Yeah, the Black Devil limited KS edition... Black with RED display)

I have my Pi 2, the Camera, a 1Kg spool of black PLA...
Just need the printer and the rest of the parts...

I backed the Zeni Kinetics Origin. The main feature that caught my eye was a 12x12x12 build volume that can be expanded to 12x12x18 (300mmx300mmx450mm).

The Kickstarter campaign actually failed but they offered printers at the Kickstarter prices to any of the backers that wanted them. They have been slow to deliver but they are making progress with their final designs. Some day, I'll have my 12x12x18, dual extruder, Smoothie board (NXP LPC 1768/9 32-bits Cortex-M3 MCU) powered 3D printer.

The Overlord looks nice. I must have missed that one since I had stopped looking and that part and had started waiting....and waiting...and waiting.
