A milestone...my 11 year old daughter, Kat, programmed her first "Hello World" tonight as I helped her go through the initial steps of the C tutorial in Simple IDE. Thank you to all who put effort into the propeller, the activity bot, and all the learning programs. The look on her face and shriek of excitement (as only an 11 year old girl can do!) :) was pretty awesome to watch.
I think we just opened up a whole new horizon for her.

What a magical moment. Well done to both you and Kat.

When I was 10 I dreamed of having a computer. There were no such things around. I imagined building a simple machine from rotary telephone dials and relays as I had seen described in a book some where. Far beyond my capabilities of course.

I had to be content with building simple circuits, flashing lights, making sounds, a radio, with my Philips Electronics Engineer kit. Which was magical as well...

Hey, you have to back up a bit, the traditional "Hello World" on a micro-controller is to get a LED flashing !

It is exciting when kids make discoveries in electronics, that is why I enjoy mentoring kids when they come in the store.

This is great. I had my milestone in 1975 with my Altair 8800 when I blinked my first LED.

    Tender age of 19. :)

You should of have a video recording that epic event!

Thanks everyone! It was a neat thing to be a part of, and I hope she continues on this path for a long time. No video, but we did take a picture. :) I'll report back when we get to blinking lights and cool stuff, but we just finished with the math part of the activity bot tutorial. Lots more to go before we can do her science fair project. She wants to do a project on "How does a robot move?" so we've got a ways to go. Hope we can finish in time. We go the track kit and crawler kit so she can compare how the bot moves with those vs with the traditional wheels.
