Identify Drill Head position in real-time - A solution is looking for an application

A researcher from Mechanical Engineering faculty shared the following question in Crowd Whisper:

We developed a method to identify the position of a drill inside the drilled material in real time. The material can be composite materials and stacks of composite materials and metal.
The drilled hole diameter can be between 5-15 mm. and depth between 5 - 40 mm.
We are looking to integrate or develop a drilling optimization system that will adjust the drilling parameters according to drill position.
We are looking to get applicable processes / products / companies / departments that will require such capabilities, as well as potential contacts

Any ideas?

Thanks

See this post about a wild 5-axis milling machine: http://forums.parallax.com/showthread.php/159581-For-Martin_H-and-IK-Lovers-Everywhere?p=1309450#post1309450

If your system can keep up with all the motion and rapid cutting action going on, it might provide useful feedback to the controller. Although it does a doggone good job already.

I was going to suggest selling the device to endodontists to help with root canals but I think the holes drilled down the roots are outside the specifications of the device.

Don't devices drilling holes generally know how deep the hole is as it is drilled? The depths and sizes listed seem too small to need to worry about drills wandering off target.

Erco - the reference to your post is a great one. Indeed an amazing job. Please note that the machine used is an "old" Deckel-Maho 60P and hyperCAD - hyperMILL enabled the extra-ordinary CAD-CAMcapabilities. DAISHIN SEIKO level of Mechanical Engineering is bringing these tools to the cutting-edge.

Duane - Drilling in composite materials, as an example - by 5 mm depth already the drill may be off.
