July of 2013 one went for $307K.

Call me crazy, but I think I could buy the parts and build one myself for FAR less than these guys are paying. I guess if you have nothing better to do with your money!!!

There are several Apple I replica kits that have been available from time to time. The Briel replica uses a Propeller chip for the video chip which is now hard to find. Replicas are legitimate because Steve Wozniak owned the copyrighted for the Apple I ROM and released it forward hobby usage.

The Briel Apple I replica is great, I built one. But it's not really a replica as such.. it's "API compatible". You could build a real replica though, Mike Willegal makes PCBs and Unicorn will sell you a complete Apple I set of components. This is not cheap though, but as far as I'm concerned it would have more personal value to me than an old 'real' Apple I. MW makes Apple II PCBs too.. the same can be said for that one.

Nobody is buying this thing to use it as a computer. They are buying it as an artifact, a rare artifact connected to the beginning of a powerful and enduring dynasty. I have a Quest Super Elf I keep as a reminder of the early days of computing, and it lives in a shadow box hanging on the wall behind my work desk. It does work and I've mounted it so that I can hook it up to power, but what would be the point? Using it is not the reason I keep it.
