Metal Detecting Sensor

Hello Everyone, I'm looking at building a robotic lawnmower. The mechanical stuff is easy because I'm a mechanical engineer. So, controllers are really new, but I'm learning fast. Is the such thing as a metal sensor? I know there Are electronic wizards that that can build a circuit in there sleep, but that's not me. Your help is greatly appreciated. Thank you....

I prefer not to build the sensor. I am looking to install an underground un-powered copper wire. When the sensor gets near the wire, it sends a 0-5V to the Stamp2 as an input.

Is the metal detecting sensor to keep the robot from running over metal items or do you want to use a wire "fence"?

For the Quad coil design I recommend using the Ratiometric Ref Coil Example Code.
