Propscope as a packet sniffer?

I'm currently working on my Cisco certification. As such, I would like to be able to capture some Ethenet packets between my P/C - Router, and Router to ISP. Can the Propscope be configured to sniff packets?

    No, not really. The propeller isn't fast enough. You might have some success with a wiznet chip hooked up to a propeller, but I'm not sure if wiznet chips can do this.

    Why don't you just use tcpdump or wireshark or something on a PC?

    Your duplicate post was deleted, as cross/duplicate posts are not allowed.

    There are no protocol analyzers on the PropScope. The firmware is proprietary, and third party, I believe.

    You are probably looking for a Logic Analyzer , not a scope.

    Parallax does see a Logic Analyzer .

    Thanks elerodude. I have wireshark already, but that wont help me on the router-to-modem-ISP side. I may just grab a network analyzer from somewhere else.

    Can't you plug your computer in between your router and modem through a (non routing, non switching) ethernet hub?

    yeah I agree. anytime I've had issues with gear, I just popped in a hub between my gear and ran wireshark. I'm also going for my ccna and so far that's what I've done.

    I would check out the Raspberry Pi network troubleshooting examples with a Google search and you may find a way to do what you want. A Beagle Bone Black or similar Linux board can usually run the same programs. If you don't have a Pi of your own and need to borrow one on short notice , just ask one of your neighborhood kids for a loan.

    A few examples of what you can run:
    - Packet Sniffing (shell script and python script)
    - Wireshark
    - Tshark.
    - NMAP
    - IPTraf utility
    - Pwnie Express.
    -.PwnPi - open source security tester
    - connect to a Hurricane Electric tunnel using your current IPv4-only service provider.
    etc...
