Propellor BOE USB Port

I needed some clarification on the USB port. I hook up a power source to power the board through the USB but it does not light the board up. Do you need to hook up a 9V and then have a 5V through the USB going to power it? Kind of confused about this.

Thanks!

Is this USB connection power only? If so, I'm not sure if the Propeller BOE can be powered this way.

I know on the QuickStart board, there's a pin which needs to be tied to ground in order to use power only USB cables. I don't think there's an easy way to do this with the PropBOE.

Can I use the USB as my power source for the output to devices and power the board with a 9V? To contorl servos etc can I use the USB power source?

Generally servos draw too much current for either a 9V battery or USB.

I am trying to do something really simple for starters. I am trying to take a basic stamp or propellor board, hookup an old RC car to it and an ultrasonic transducer and have it just steer around trying to avoid obstacles and powering the steering and drive motors. Would I be able to do that with the USB battery I have hooked up to the Propellor or Stamp board. Or should I just get a breadboard and wire it on there with a small chip?

I'm not sure I'd call this "really simple".
and powering the steering and drive motors.

How are the steering and drive motors controlled? What are their voltage and current requirements?

This will depend on the voltage and current requirements of the car and how much current your "USB battery" can supply.

What is "it" and what "small chip" would you use?

My Prop BOE powers up with just the USB to computer. However, I do not use it this way.
